Pump Up Your Fertility With Zinc

Isn’t Zinc for Colds and Flu?

Zinc is a mineral that is important to the body in many ways. Zinc helps to heal wounds, supports normal growth and, and keeps the immune system strong. Zinc is found in many parts of the body, mostly in the skeletal muscles and bones, as well as in organs such as the kidneys, pancreas, liver, prostate and testes. Zinc is a key essential nutrient involved in hundreds of enzymatic processes in the body, including the creation of neurotransmitters and hormones.

Low zinc levels in your system can make you prone to bouts of colds and flu, slow wound healing, and recurrent infections. Get everything cold and flu going around the office? Take zinc for your fertility diet!

But most importantly, if you are trying to conceive, low zinc levels can have a major negative impact on your fertility. The relationship between fertility and zinc is explained below, and how increasing your zinc levels will help with your fertility diet.

How does Zinc affect Fertility?

When trying to conceive, providing the body with proper nutrients for your fertility diet is very important. Although all nutrients are necessary to keep the body well-nourished, there are some that have a bigger effect on fertility than others. Zinc is one of them!

  • Studies have shown that zinc is an essential component of genetic material and plays a large role in the health of the reproductive system.
  • A lack of zinc can lead to chromosomal defects in men and women, a problem which may result in miscarriage.
  • Zinc is essential for both male and female partners.

Zinc and Female Fertility

Healthy zinc levels play a role in a woman’s fertility in various positive ways which promote conception.
Here is how zinc affects female fertility:

  • An optimal amount of zinc is necessary for the production and maturing of eggs necessary for ovulation. A lack of zinc may affect the production of eggs, and prevent ovulation from taking place.
  • Follicular fluid helps the mature egg travel through the fallopian tube to be fertilised. Zinc maintains follicular fluid levels without which the egg cannot travel freely through the fallopian tubes, and conception may be prevented.
  • Fibroids are benign growths in the uterus which can grow quite large, and cause inflammation which makes falling pregnant even more difficult. Studies have shown that good zinc levels can actually reduce the size of fibroids, and help deal with the inflammation, which will better your chances of conceiving.
  • Zinc plays a major role in regulating fertility hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. If these hormones are out of balance, it will have a critical effect on your ability to fall pregnant.

Ladies… Note that low levels of zinc have also been directly linked to unexplained miscarriage in the early stages of pregnancy.

Zinc and Male Fertility

It is not only women who can use zinc to boost fertility in their fertility diet, as good levels of zinc are also essential for male fertility. For men with fertility problems, increasing zinc levels has been shown to boost sperm production and improve the sperm quality.
Here is how zinc affects male fertility:

  • Zinc is found in high concentrations in sperm. It is also necessary for the formation of the outer layer and tail of the sperm. If a man is deficient in zinc, the quantity and quality of the sperm will suffer, diminishing his ability to impregnate his partner.
  • A lack of zinc which hampers the correct formation of sperm, leads to immature sperm that cannot mature to a stage that gives mobility needed to fertilise the egg. This will also result in conception difficulties.
  • Zinc is a very necessary part of healthy genetic material. A zinc deficiency in either partner may cause chromosomal changes which can cause reduced fertility, and a greater risk of miscarriage.

Men… increasing your zinc levels is vital for sperm health, numbers and movement before attempted conception.

How to Naturally increase your Zinc Levels

There are certain foods that can boost zinc levels in the body, but research has indicated that animal foods are better sources of zinc than plant foods.

Zinc rich animal foods include seafood (especially oysters!), beef, lamb, pork, skinless chicken, eggs, and whole dairy.
Zinc rich plant foods such as beans, nuts, seeds, wheat germ, mushrooms, spinach and dark chocolate.

What about Zinc Supplements for Conception?

Many people are deficient in zinc, we see it every day. It is important to take zinc supplementation 4 months prior to conception. If you are a male with poor sperm count, health or movement your dosage will need to be need higher. If you have poor wound healing and or a low immune system your dose also needs to be higher. Feel free to contact us and we can help you to determine the best form of zinc at the right dosage for your unique circumstances, or check out our zinc containing Baby Building Supplement Packs!

Wrapping Zinc and Fertility Up

Both partners need to get their bodies ready for planned conception. Embracing a healthy lifestyle, eating a good diet that contains zinc-rich foods and is also high in other nutrients, is essential for not only good health, but optimal fertility.
Healthy sperm, healthy egg production, regular ovulation, hormonal balance and a healthy uterine lining are the order of the day for a planned pregnancy and subsequent healthy baby building.

Transform your health with zinc, you have everything to gain for a health-filled future for you and your baby.
